Michael Feinstein's lifetime interest in, and immense knowledge of, the music of the Great American Songbook led him to found the organization in 2007. The organization was formerly known as the Michael Feinstein Foundation for the Preservation of the Great American Songbook and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative; in July of 2014, the Board of Directors voted to permanently change the organization's name to the Great American Songbook Foundation.

In 2009, Michael Feinstein was appointed Artistic Director of The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, IN.  At that time, the Foundation committed to permanently locating on the Center's campus.  The Great American Songbook Foundation's administrative offices and archives are located on the Gallery level of The Palladium, a 1600-seat concert hall that opened in January 2011.

The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. We are committed to preserving this music and its history via the following initiatives and programs:

  • National educational opportunities for high school musicians;
  • Multi-disciplinary curriculum for elementary through high school students;
  • Preservation of the physical artifacts of the creators, performers, and publishers;
  • A research facility for scholars, historians, and performers; and
  • A multimedia gallery for exhibiting our collections to the public.

The Great American Songbook Foundation fulfills its mission to preserve America's rich musical legacy through the Songbook Archives & Library, which houses physical artifacts such as sheet music, personal papers, musical arrangements, and books available to students, educators, and researchers. The Songbook Exhibit Gallery displays rotating public exhibits that share the history, music, and culture of the Songbook. The Songbook Academy™ is a national program for high school singers, and is the only music intensive dedicated solely to the music of the Songbook.
