Based in Charleston, SC, this quintet offers a jazzy take on traditional music from the West Africa-influenced Gullah culture of America’s southeastern Sea Islands. The name, Ranky Tanky, translates loosely as “work it” or “get funky” in the Gullah dialect. The repertoire ranges from playful game songs and ecstatic shouts to heartbreaking spirituals and delicate lullabies.
