Three of the great twentieth century composers for concert band are featured, and the concert climax is the magnificent Third Symphony of James Barnes. We will perform Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F and Alfred Reed’s Symphonic Prelude on Black is the Color. The concert will open with another of the fanfares premiered at the January inauguration concert, Fanfare for Democracy by James Stephenson, a favorite composer of the IWS. We will also play his Luther: In Canon, a work from the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and one that the IWS was a commissioning consortium participant.
