Staff Spotlight: Ed Penman, Facility Manager

2/6/2019 12AM

Ed Penman admits he’s no musical virtuoso, but he keeps the Palladium humming like a finely tuned instrument.

As Facility Manager, the Logansport native oversees all mechanical systems, maintenance and cleaning at the Center’s state-of-the-art flagship venue. He joined the operation early on as a subcontractor, advancing to his full-time position nearly five years ago. A longtime Carmel resident, he and his wife of 21 years have two teenage children.

In a nutshell, what do you do around here?
I am responsible for the daily operation of the building, including all maintenance. My main duties involve making sure the building systems are operating at optimal levels and that the building is kept clean and presentable. We have extremely high standards when it comes to cleanliness and appearance. I’m very proud to say that the building in 2019 looks much like it did when it first opened in 2011.

What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of my job is having the unbelievable privilege of taking care of this beautiful building and world-class concert hall. I always say that when I walk through the door most days, I feel like I’m at home. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Are you now, or have you ever been, a performing artist?
I can’t sing or play an instrument, but as a lifelong music lover, I get to see so many great performances, all while being paid!

What are your interests or hobbies outside the day job?
In my spare time, I like to work on home improvement projects and work in the yard. One of my favorite things to do is painting. I find it to be very relaxing and rewarding.

Who has been your favorite performer at the Center?
I’ve been able to see some wonderful performers over the years, and my favorites keep changing. Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing Harry Connick Jr. and Dennis DeYoung, former lead singer of Styx, both give spectacular performances in the same week.

What surprised you most when you first started working here?
When I first started working here as a subcontractor, my only real concern was helping take care of this wonderful building – I was all about the building. But once I became an employee, I realized how lucky I was to be involved with such dedicated and hardworking individuals.
