Songbook Academy alums connect and create

Last Thursday, the Great American Songbook Foundation hosted a Zoom chat for over thirty 2019 Songbook Academy® alums, so that staff members and founder Michael Feinstein could offer their support and create an outlet for some much-needed social engagement during this isolating time for young artists.

Songbook Academy, a program of the Great American Songbook Foundation, is a national music intensive hosted every summer at the Center for the Performing Arts. The impact lasts much longer than one week in Carmel – alums, staff and mentors stay connected year-round. Especially now, the connections and friendships made possible by this program continue to inspire and create a sense of belonging.

Songbook Academy alums also are taking part in the Instagram challenge #SongbookMyWay by submitting covers of Songbook standards. Visit the Songbook Academy’s feed to listen to alums from as far back as 2012 perform timeless standards reimagined in their own unique ways. These are the voices of tomorrow – let’s encourage them to keep creating!

Jazz at Lincoln Center presents “Worldwide Concert”

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, a perennial favorite here at our Center, has lined up jazz artists and celebrities from throughout the world for a special online musical celebration Wednesday night.

The two-hour Worldwide Concert for Our Culture, an alternative approach to JALC’s annual Spring Gala, will feature performers from Japan, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Cuba and the United States joining the orchestra from remote locations to perform the songs that made them fall in love with jazz.

The presentation will premiere at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at this link, where more information on the event is available. The archived concert also will be viewable afterward on the JALC Facebook and YouTube accounts.
