Interlude - April 16

April 16, 2020

Movie night, live concert for kids, World Voice Day karaoke compilation and more

Welcome back to Interlude, your twice-weekly dose of stay-at-home arts and culture from the Center and our friends. Below, you’ll find fun and inspiring material for all ages.

World Voice Day: Quarantine Karaoke Compilation

Happy World Voice Day, everyone!

Under normal circumstances, we would be gathering with community members and Group Vocal Coaching class participants to enjoy an evening of singing together in the Palladium. Since we can't be together today, we put together a community compilation of #CPAQuarantineKaraoke videos for you to enjoy.

We still have so many individual videos to keep sharing, so make sure to check out the four full performances below. Stay tuned for more videos in our future Interludes. And if you still want to participate, please do! Just share your video on social media with the hashtag #CPAQuarantineKaraoke.

Keep singing, friends.

A Facebook jam for families

The Center’s Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam concerts are a monthly tradition for local families with young children, who were probably disappointed by the cancellation of a March performance by Dorin. The Indianapolis folk-pop trio specializes in original songs for tender ears, as heard on the 2018 debut release Do You Dream of Me?

Undeterred, Dorin guitarist-singer-songwriter Jennasen Snyder is forging ahead this weekend with a free, socially distanced concert delivered via Facebook Live. Tune in to the Center’s Facebook page at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for a half-hour of kid-friendly tunes that grown-ups will dig, too!

RSVP on the event page to get updates, and make sure you're following the Center's Facebook page to get a notification when Jennasen goes live!

Phoenix keeps rising to the challenge

Speaking of Faegre Drinker Peanut Butter & Jam, the dancers of Indy’s Phoenix Rising Dance Company can no longer make their scheduled Palladium appearance this weekend, but you can learn more about this local dance company in the video above. And as we noted previously, the company is offering online dance and movement sessions that we’re featuring through live watch parties on our Facebook page three days a week: Free Movement/Improvisation for all ages at 11 a.m. Saturdays, Morning Movement for all fitness levels at 9 a.m. Mondays, and Mindful Flexibility for teens and adults at 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

Find the full schedule on Phoenix Rising's Facebook page, and tune in to our Monday, Wednesday and Saturday watch parties on our Facebook page.

WOTE not just sitting on the sidelines

Just a reminder: The Canadian indie-pop band Walk Off The Earth was originally scheduled to make its Palladium debut this Friday but has postponed the performance to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9. Tickets purchased for the previous date will be honored, and tickets are still available at TheCenterPresents.org/WalkOffTheEarth. The performance is part of the Katz, Sapper & Miller Pop/Rock Series and the 2020-21 Center Presents Season sponsored by Allied Solutions.

While waiting to resume the U.S. tour – supporting the new album HERE WE GO! – the videogenic band is still entertaining fans on social media with new music (such as this Zoom-based cover of Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now”) and a weekly cooking show featuring their adorable children. Also, you can read our exclusive interview with the band on our website.

Finally, for your virtual entertainment, their full performance from the 2017 Paris Lollapalooza is linked above.

Saturday: Your home is alive with The Sound of Music

Get ready for the ultimate Songbook Movie Saturday with our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation! This Saturday, the Songbook team invites you to join in its weekly Facebook movie night series by streaming or watching your DVD/VHS of the classic musical film The Sound of Music.

Leading up to each movie night, the Foundation is sharing treasures from the Songbook Archives and challenging you to share photos and memories relating to the chosen film. Follow the Foundation on Facebook this week for a few teasers, and then tune in at 7 p.m. Saturday for live conversations and fun facts as you watch.

Songbook Movie Saturdays will continue with more classic movie musicals in the coming weeks. Some hints about the upcoming features: a Jerry Herman smash starring Barbra Streisand, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first musical together, and a little Sharks vs. Jets rivalry to the tune and lyrics of Bernstein and Sondheim. Ready, set, guess the musicals!

Watch works of Webber weekly

A giant of musical theater is offering his work for free streaming on a new YouTube channel.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Universal Pictures have launched The Shows Must Go On, which is presenting a different full-length Lloyd Webber production every weekend for the next several weeks. Each installment appears at 2 p.m. EDT Fridays and remains available for the next 48 hours to satisfy your Broadway/West End fix.

Watch Lloyd Webber's official announcement here, and catch the streaming musicals at The Shows Must Go On.
