Interlude - April 7

April 7, 2020

#CarmelCares - Quarantine Karaoke - songwriting - National Theatre online

Welcome back to Interlude, visiting your inbox twice a week to bring you a curated collection of arts, entertainment and education opportunities available online. Today’s installment takes you from the streets of Carmel to the stage of London’s National Theatre. Enjoy!

Carmel community shows it cares

It’s beautiful when a community rallies around a cause, and that’s what we’ve seen this past week with the launch of Carmel Cares, a five-week social media initiative by city government and other local institutions intended “to spark kindness, positivity and unity among residents of all ages.”

Each week will feature interactive and engaging activities such as Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation fitness workouts, Facebook Live bedtime stories read by local celebrities, friendly games and competitions, scavenger hunts, activities that support mental health, arts and entertainment items, and more. Details about each week’s theme and activities will be posted on the Carmel Cares FacebookInstagram and Twitter accounts as well as the City of Carmel website. Residents are encouraged to share their own photos, videos and stories through the #CarmelCares public Facebook group and on their own pages using the #CarmelCares hashtag.

You don’t even have to live in Carmel to enjoy the content. Learn more here.

Have you sent us your CPA Quarantine Karaoke video yet?

In a normal year, the Center would be gearing up to host its annual World Voice Day event, part of an international observance each April celebrating the magic of human vocal chords. Since we can’t invite you to sing your favorite song on the Palladium stage, we strongly encourage you to display your talents through our CPA Quarantine Karaoke campaign!

Pick a tune, make your own karaoke-style video, and submit your masterpiece here. We’ll be sharing a compilation of the best entries, and you can share yours wherever else you like with the hashtag #CPAQuarantineKaraoke. (Don't forget to tag us @CPApresents.) By submitting a video before April 14, you’ll be entered to win a pair of tickets to a select Center Presents performance in our upcoming 10th Anniversary Season!

Here's a great entry from your fellow patrons, the Bhatt family:

Thoughts from our President

How does a performing arts organization function in a stay-at-home world? Presenters, performers and producers across America and around the planet are finding creative ways to answer that question. Jeff McDermott, President/CEO of the Center and the Great American Songbook Foundation, shared his local perspective in a column for Current.

Try your hand at songwriting

Have you ever written a song? Well, if you’re at home with time on your hands, it might be the perfect opportunity. Luckily for you, our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation have created a quick lyric-writing activity for your family of songwriters of all ages!

The great songwriters include composers such as George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington, who wrote the music to some of our favorite Songbook tunes, while lyricists like Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Gus Kahn and Cole Porter (who wrote music and lyrics) would focus on the words that really tell the listener a story.

Today is your chance to rewrite the lyrics to the tune of two children’s songs you probably know by heart. Follow this printable guide to take your first step as a songwriter, and share your lyrics by tagging @SongbookFoundation on Facebook. Bonus points if you record your song and post the video.

Happy songwriting – we can’t wait to give you a standing ovation!

Who's up for some British comedy?

The National Theatre of Great Britain in London is closed for now, but through an initiative called National Theatre at Home, the company is opening its vaults to provide free online content to the public. One highlight is offering world-class stage productions for one week each of free streaming on YouTube.

On tap for the next few days is One Man, Two Guvnors, a hilarious West End and Broadway hit featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from funnyman James Corden.
