Interlude - April 9

April 9, 2020

Virtual dance classes, Songbook sing-along, Easter concert, Rita Moreno and more!

Welcome back to Interlude, your twice-weekly dose of stay-at-home arts and culture from the Center and our friends. Below, you’ll find fun and inspiring material for all ages.

Stay active with Phoenix Rising Dance Co.

Indianapolis’ Phoenix Rising Dance Company is familiar to fans of the Center’s Dance Discovery classes and Faegre Drinker PB&J performances. For the next two weeks, to help people stay active while staying at home, the troupe is offering daily online dance and movement sessions, and we’re hosting watch parties on our Facebook page three days a week:

9-10 a.m. Mondays – Morning Movement with Amanda Browning
For all fitness levels, a full-body, low-impact, fitness-based class designed to burn calories, build muscle and boost endorphins; requires chair or other waist-high surface; light weights or resistance band optional

10-11 a.m. Wednesdays – Mindful Flexibility with Kylie Williams
For teens and adults, yoga-inspired drills and exercises to improve strength and range of motion

11 a.m. to noon Saturdays – Free Movement/Improvisation with Andre Williams
For all ages and skill levels, an exploration of natural movement without emphasizing technique

Find the full schedule on Phoenix Rising's Facebook page, and make sure to tune in for our Monday, Wednesday and Saturday watch parties on our Facebook page!

Rita Moreno sets new date for Palladium show

Unrelated to the current public health crisis, a bout of laryngitis prevented stage and screen star Rita Moreno from making her Palladium debut in December. We were pleased to announce Wednesday that the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner plans to hit the road again this fall and grace our stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Sing along with the Songbook Foundation staff

Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the Great American Songbook Foundation are usually filled with music, thanks to the Foundation’s Perfect Harmony group music program for older adults living with dementia. Though the Foundation has suspended on-site programming for now, it is keeping music at the forefront of people's lives by sending music packets and resources twice a week to participating senior living communities in the area.

Luckily for us, these resources, sing-alongs and musical activities are valuable tools for everyone to keep making music in this time of social distancing. Check out the video above of Songbook Foundation staffers and board-certified music therapist Allegra Hein (an advisor to Perfect Harmony), hosting a virtual spring-themed sing-along to the tune of “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”!

You can find more musical materials and activity guides here on the Foundation's website. This page will be updated regularly with new resources.

Andrea Bocelli to stream Easter Sunday concert

Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli hopes to provide “love, healing and hope” to his beleaguered countrymen on Easter Sunday with a special live concert streamed from the currently closed Duomo Cathedral in Milan.

Beginning at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on his YouTube channel, the 61-year-old tenor is expected to perform “Ave Maria” and other classics accompanied only by the Duomo's organist. Read more about the concert at CNN.com.
