Interlude - July 28

July 28, 2020

Talent show submissions, Final Showcase recap, streaming jazz and more

Welcome back to Interlude, your twice-weekly portal to all sorts of fun, enriching and educational material, available free online from local, national and global artists and presenters.

Talent show hits keep coming

Deadlines can be inspirational, and we were excited to see many great entries flood into the Center’s At Home Talent Show as the clock ticked down last week. Here are just a few of your talented neighbors out there in the community:

  • Pianist Doug Brooks interprets Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” from the classic holiday special A Charlie Brown Christmas.
  • Soprano Molly Hotek, member of multiple local choirs, sings “Bendecid Su Nombre” from choral composer Dan Forrest's Jubilate Deo.
  • High-schooler Savanna Jensen sings “Times Are Hard for Dreamers” from the musical Amélie.
  • Teen singer-songwriter Piper Murphy performs a lovely ballad, “Dear Brooke.”
  • Indianapolis resident and Carmel High School grad Scott Semester celebrates flightless seabirds with a rendition of “Los Pinguinos.”

Look for more great homegrown talent next week, including the prestigious At Home Talent Show compilation video!

Final Showcases: Watch tomorrow's stars today

“I’m uplifted and reinvigorated … thank you and BRAVO to all!” – Viewer Comment

Thousands of viewers tuned in Saturday to watch the first-ever virtual Songbook Academy Final Showcases, five hours of music and fun with 40 of America’s most talented high school singers, hosted by Great American Songbook Foundation Founder Michael Feinstein and featuring special guests Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer, 2019 Songbook Youth Ambassador Sadie Fridley and Postmodern Jukebox founder Scott Bradlee.

If you missed it, then we have your evening entertainment mapped out for the week! The five hour-long showcases, sponsored by locally owned Ruth’s Chris Steak House, are now available on Facebook or YouTube for your viewing pleasure. Watch or re-watch the showcases here.

Relive seasons past with 'Rewind' playlists

We’re happy to introduce a new feature to Interlude: Shepherd Insurance Rewind Playlists. Each month, we’ll look back across the Center’s near-decade of history to curate a Spotify playlist of artists who have performed during that month.

Our first installment celebrates July, a month that has brought the Center such artists as Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Chris Isaak, Michael McDonald, the O’Jays and other fine performers. Enjoy the music.

Find your jazz fix here

If you’ve been missing the spontaneity and intimacy of your favorite jazz club lately, you are not alone – imagine how the musicians feel.

On the brighter side, many artists and venues are rising to the challenge with streaming performances for fans to enjoy at little or no cost, and Jazz at Lincoln Center is compiling such opportunities on this handy blog.

One item that caught our eye comes from the Frisco-based SFJAZZ organization, which presents – for a nominal fee of $5 a month – a weekly concert called Fridays at Five (8 p.m. EDT), featuring some of the genre’s top names. Learn more here.
