Interlude - June 25

June 25, 2020

A curiously green audience, remembering "Satch," exploring the Songbook Lounge and more

Welcome back to Interlude, your twice-a-week dose of digitally accessible arts and entertainment opportunities!

SSSL isn't just a snake making a typo

Who is Shiel Sexton? Why is it called a "Songbook Lounge"? What's that big screen on the wall, and can I touch it?

Our VP of Operations Jeff Steeg takes you behind the scenes of the Palladium's Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge for our latest installment of Places, Please!, brought to you by Shepherd Insurance.

Learn about the SSSL here.

A fresh note from Michael Feinstein

Our artistic director, Michael Feinstein, is dropping by for another hello – this time to say thank you. Watch the video here.

Notes with Michael Feinstein is a series of videos sponsored by the Payne & Mencias Group. You'll enjoy songs and snippets from our artistic director, shared in our Interludes and on social media.

Songbook Academy alum honors "Ambassador Satch"

In observance of African-American Music Appreciation Month, 2019 Songbook Academy Songbook Celebration Award winner Chris Santiago of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, recorded a beautiful tribute performance of “La Vie en rose” in honor of legendary American trumpeter, composer, vocalist and actor Louis Daniel Armstrong. Watch his performance here.

With a career that spanned five decades, Armstrong (also known as "Pops," "Satchmo" or "Ambassador Satch") was among the most influential figures in jazz and popular music. His rich, gravelly voice was instantly recognizable, and he was known for his charismatic stage presence, scat singing and trumpet playing. Armstrong was one of the first popular African-American entertainers to “cross over," transcending racism to impact the broader American culture. Learn more about Armstrong by visiting the Louis Armstrong House Museum’s new virtual exhibit, That’s My Home.

Asked about his song choice, Santiago said, “Louis has really helped shaped the course of jazz. I would even say jazz would not be what it is today without Louis’ influence on this genre of music. I’m so glad I could help the Songbook Academy in honoring and paying tribute to a legend and one of my biggest influences as a trumpet player. Also, Louis never missed a note on any recording!”

Summer in Hamilton County

Believe it or not, it's summer again in Hamilton County, and our friends at Visit Hamilton County have an uplifting new tourism video to share.

Soar above the trees, cycle along the Monon, and then get out there and do it in person – from a safe distance, of course.

Green with envy of this full house

Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu just opened for the first time in months to a unusual full house.

The UceLi Quartet performed, appropriately, Puccini's "Crisantemi" to a house full of plants from a local nursery. Each plant will be donated with a certificate to a healthcare professional in Barcelona.

"[The Liceu] welcomes and leads a highly symbolic act that defends the value of art, music and nature as a letter of introduction to our return to activity."
