June 9, 2020

Cole Porter, Usher Spotlight, classical podcast and more

Welcome back to Interlude, the twice-a-week dispatch that brings online arts, entertainment and education opportunities straight to your inbox so you don’t have to look for them.

Usher Spotlight: Diana Russell

It’s Tuesday and time for another Usher Spotlight, where we recognize the dedicated members of The National Bank of Indianapolis Usher Corps. More than 300 volunteers devote thousands of hours each year to serve the community through the Center and the Great American Songbook Foundation.

This week’s spotlight falls on volunteer Diana Russell, who is not only a fan of the arts, but also a creator of crafts.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Porter!

Today, our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation are celebrating Indiana-born composer/lyricist Cole Porter, one of the inaugural members of the Songbook Hall of Fame.

Porter's decades-long string of Broadway successes began with the 1928 hit Paris and the introduction of “Let's Do It (Let’s Fall in Love).” He followed with numerous musicals and films including The Gay Divorcee, Anything Goes, Kiss Me Kate, Born to Dance and High Society. Porter's productions introduced songs that were musically complex with witty, urbane lyrics that audiences loved, such as “Night and Day,” “Anything Goes,” “Begin the Beguine” and “I Get a Kick Out of You,” which remain treasured standards to this day.

In honor of Porter’s birthday, the Foundation is showcasing 2019 Songbook Academy alum Bobby Barksdale of Buffalo, New York, who brought to life the popular tune “In the Still of the Night” on the Palladium stage last summer. View Bobby’s stunning performance here, and don’t forget to wish Cole Porter a very happy birthday!

Classical podcast offers Melanated Moments

Classical Music Indy, the nonprofit group whose programming includes classical radio on WICR-FM and other stations, launched a new podcast this spring to celebrate musical works composed by, for and about people of color.

Melanated Moments in Classic Music is hosted by international opera soprano Angela Brown and musician and music scholar Joshua Thompson. The first season of six episodes, most around 15 minutes in length, is now available on the CMI website as well as Stitcher, Spotify and other podcast sources.
