Interlude - May 21

May 21, 2020

Family sock hop, backstage at the Palladium, public attitude survey and more!

Welcome back to Interlude, visiting your inbox twice a week to share news from the Center along with the best in online arts, entertainment and education options, selected by our staff just for you.

Also below, we invite you to take a brief survey on your thoughts about health and safety, public events and attractions, and “reopening.”

Faegre Drinker PB&J Replay: Martinie's Boogie Three

Three band members - one on piano, one on tenor saxophone, and one on drumset - perform for a room of children and their parents gathered around on the floor.

The Bloomington-based combo Martinie’s Boogie Three specializes in 1950s-era piano-based rock ’n’ roll and its predecessor, boogie-woogie, as delighted families learned during the group’s Peanut Butter & Jam performance a couple years back.

With thanks to Faegre Drinker, sponsor of the monthly kids concert series, we offer you this video recap and a batch of tips on how to throw your own 1950s-style sock hop at home.

Backstage hospitality at the Palladium

The Center’s VP of Operations, Jeff Steeg, is back with another installment of Places, Please!, a series of mini-tours of our campus brought to you by Shepherd Insurance.

Today, Jeff takes us backstage at the Palladium to see the dressing rooms and green room, where our artist concierges and other staffers work tirelessly to create a comfy home away from home for visiting artists. (Spoiler alert: The so-called “green room” holds a terrible secret!)

Ladies and gentlemen, start your … voices?

A typical Memorial Day weekend would find thousands of race fans at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the more wholesome festivities include the singing of “(Back Home Again in) Indiana.” The mere thought of the tune – sung by Jim Nabors 36 times between 1972 and 2014 – conjures images of crowded stands, checkered flags and a big gulp of milk in Victory Lane.

Perfect Harmony Program Sponsor

In a nod to that tradition, our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation offer their own sing-along rendition of “Indiana,” along with a whole packet of Memorial Day-themed music here for you and your family to enjoy. Special thanks to board-certified music therapist Allegra Hein with Woodland Terrace of Carmel for sharing these resources and accompanying the Foundation’s Perfect Harmony program staff on piano.

Participate in the statewide #RestartSurvey

The Arts Council of Indianapolis, IndyStar and several other civic partners want to know: what will make you feel comfortable with making plans again?

Because this survey is being conducted in partnership with 14 Indiana community organizations, you might receive more than one invitation. Please complete only one survey.

One man. One cello. Six suites.

In an impressive display of athleticism and class as well as musicianship, two-time Palladium headliner Yo-Yo Ma will perform all six of J.S. Bach’s solo cello suites uninterrupted this weekend for national radio broadcast and worldwide video streaming.

Starting at 3 p.m. ET Sunday, the 2.5-hour performance is presented by WCRB Classical Radio Boston as “a memorial for those we have lost in the pandemic and a tribute to the resilience of our communities.” The program reflects Ma’s now-rescheduled Bach Project tour, in which he is performing the suites in 36 communities across six continents.

You can catch this show on Yo-Yo Ma’s YouTube channel and at ClassicalWCRB.org, but don’t be late – it’s a live-only event, “uniting an audience in a shared experience.”
