“Bubble grunge” duo ready to rock the Studio

The Center’s new Live at the Center livestream series kicks off tomorrow night with the Charlie Ballantine Quartet, and close behind next Thursday, Oct. 29, comes the Indianapolis duo Moxxie, gold-level winner of IndyStar’s 2019 Best Local Band poll. The heavy but catchy sound of guitarist-vocalist Jessie Phelps and drummer Rocky Rodriguez could be classified as fuzz rock, but “bubble grunge” works too, the members say.

Sponsored by Allied Solutions, Live at the Center brings Indiana’s top musical artists directly to your chosen device and location in HD video and stereo sound. The icing on this cake is, with many music clubs shuttered by the pandemic, the musicians can make a little cash, but you can watch for free. Find out how it works.

Next, learn more about Moxxie here, and you might also enjoy the band’s quarantine-inspired Nirvana parody.

TONIGHT: Music from the campaign trail

Presidential campaigns are noisy affairs. We hear thunderous clapping, cheering crowds and slogans ringing in the air. And whether it be the brass bands of yore, U2 and Springsteen over a loudspeaker, or a crowd erupting in its own rousing cadence, music is there as well.

Our friends at the Great American Songbook Foundation invite you to join guest lecturer Dana Gorzelany-Mostak, Ph.D., at 7 p.m. this evening on the Foundation’s Facebook page for a deep dive into the history of music on the campaign trail. Gorzelany-Mostak is an associate professor of music at Georgia College and the founder of Trax on the Trail, a website and research project that explores the use of music in U.S. presidential campaigns.

Keeping the customer satisfied

Here at the Center, the friendly folks in our Box Office are known as “Patron Services,” because they do a lot more than sell tickets. No one represents that spirit better than longtime staffer Sheryl Anastas, our Patron Services Concierge. Talk about having a customer-service mentality – “It’s my thing,” she says.

But does anyone ever ask Sheryl what kinds of shows she likes to see at the Center? It’s about time, and you can learn the answer in the latest episode of Serving You, our staff profile series sponsored by The National Bank of Indianapolis. Watch it now.

A fun read with the Palladium Players

You don’t have to be a good actor to pretend to be a bad one. If that notion gives you a chuckle, join the Palladium Players on Nov. 9 for a table reading of Bad Auditions by Bad Actors, a comedy by playwright Ian McWethy. There’s space for 3-10 participants (amateurs welcome!), and you can be one of them – from the comfort of your own home if you don’t feel like going out.

Palladium Players is the Center’s on-site/online series of casual table readings, in which the speaking parts, stage directions and scene headings of a dramatic work are read out loud. Give it a try! Register for Palladium Players here.
