September 10, 2020

Over an exterior photo of the Center for the Performing Arts' campus, the text reads "Interlude: Virtual Arts and Entertainment from the Center"

Peggy Lee's personal archives, CSO on sale and more

Welcome back to Interlude, your ticket to Center news and a world of online arts, entertainment and enrichment possibilities.

Note to readers: Starting next week, Interlude will move to a weekly format, with emails arriving on Thursdays. It’s the same great content, with a little less traffic in your inbox.

Peggy Lee celebration starts today

The Great American Songbook Foundation kicks off its virtual Songbook Hall of Fame 2020 induction festivities today with an exclusive video tour of the Peggy Lee Archives hosted by Holly Foster Wells, Lee’s granddaughter and keeper of the legendary singer-songwriter-actor’s legacy. The archives in Burbank, California, tell the story of Lee’s life and career through images and artwork; diaries, poetry and lyrics; gowns, jewelry and other wardrobe items; and even handmade Lady and the Tramp figurines given to her by Walt Disney (Lee contributed songs and voices to the animated classic).

Wells also shares personal stories in the video, which premiered at 12 noon ET today on YouTube and the Songbook Foundation’s Facebook page and will remain posted for later viewing. Join the celebration on social media with the hashtags #PeggyLeeFever and #SongbookHOF2020.

Lee’s Hall of Fame induction continues through Saturday, and you’ll find more details on the Foundation’s website. Also, mark your calendar for next Thursday, Sept. 17, the kickoff of the Meredith Willson Hall of Fame induction.

IWS founder ready to drop some knowledge

A traditional preconcert perk of the Printing Partners Classical Series at the Palladium, the Center’s Classics in Context speaker program will begin an exciting new online era Tuesday, Sept. 15, with a presentation by Dr. Charles P. Conrad, trumpeter, conductor, educator and founder of our resident Indiana Wind Symphony.

Program Sponsor

Starting at 7 p.m. and viewable free through Zoom teleconferencing, Conrad will examine the term “classical” as it applies to a broad range of Western art music but also to the more narrowly defined Classical era of the 18th and 19th centuries, which gave rise to figures like Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Learn more and register for Dr. Conrad’s talk here.

On sale now: CSO's season of hope

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra is returning soon to its Palladium home under the theme Hope Renewed, promising a 2020-2021 season that “embraces the healing powers of music.” The Masterworks Series opens Oct. 10 with a program of Bartok, Grieg and Tchaikovsky.

Tickets for the October, November and December concerts are available at TheCenterPresents.org, and season subscriptions are still available through the Center Box Office at (317) 843-3800 or Tickets@TheCenterPresents.org.

Event production industry issues "red alert"

On Sept. 1, the Center’s production staff lit up the Palladium in red, joining more than 20 other venues and structures in Central Indiana and over 2,000 nationwide to call attention to COVID-19’s devastating impact on the $900-billion live events industry.

Aside from bringing joy and inspiration to our lives, the event business usually employs 10-12 million design, production and technical professionals in the U.S. Most of those folks are out of work right now, which should matter to any of us who enjoy live music, theater, dance, sports, fairs, festivals, museums – you get the picture.

The RedAlertRESTART campaign calls attention to pending legislation that would provide relief to these families. Learn more about the issues here.
